GL14.net FAQ

Who is/are GL14.net ?
GL14.net is domain name belonging to Tony Kenneford, a Newnham resident who develops web-based application software. This site has been setup by Tony with a view to establishing a broadband internet service within the village. Currently, there is no external commercial interest in this project.

What is Broadband Internet ?
Traditionally, ordinary telephone lines have been used to gain access to the Internet. However, the slow speed of these connections has limited the usefullness of the 'net and as web developers have sought to improve the richness of internet content the requirement for faster connections has resulted in technology that enables typical speeds of 10-40 times that allowed using modems.

What advantages does Broadband offer ?
The main advantages are increased speed, so webpages and emails download in a fraction of the time, an always-on connection, and the fact that your telephone is not tied up for the connection.

Why wireless ?
Wireless technology means that we can deliver the advantages of Broadband to a wide area, and for a lower cost than traditional "wired" connections.

How does this project compare to ADSL or Cable Internet ?
Very favourably. ADSL and Cable connections typically offer speeds of around 512Kbps, although this bandwidth will often be shared between a group of up to 40-50 customers (called a contention ratio). The GL14.net project will aim to deliver a minimum of 2Mbps (4x ADSL) shared between 35-40 customers. As more people use the service, the bandwidth will be increased in a similar proportion, ensuring the best performance possible.

What will the cost be ?
The target cost per connection assuming 35-40 customers will be around £25 per month, based on a 12-month contract, with reductions available for customers that can host a "network repeater". You will need to install a wireless network card to your computer, typical cost around £45 and free technical help will be available for installation and configuration. Depending on your proximity to a network access point, you may also need an improved antenna.

What other services are you proposing ?
The main proposals are customer webspace, email hosting with virus scanning, game servers, properly moderated "chat" services and other community-based websites.

Will it be secure ?
The entire network will be protected by an industry-standard firewall, minimising the risk of intrustion from outside, and other network security devices. Customers will be responsible for maintaining Anti-Virus protection although a network-based solution will be offered for a small annual fee. Again, technical help on securing your computer will be available.

I run a business and need 2/3/4 etc connections ?
Although the service is primarily aimed at private households, provision can be made for connecting your network to the wireless network that will be established. Call me for more details.

What's next ?
Before this project can get off the ground, I need to establish the likely take-up of this service amongst residents of the village. If you are keen to improve your internet connection please let me know. If you know someone else that may be interested, please let them know about this site.

How do I register my interest or ask more questions ?
You can either use the form on the contact page, or email admin@gl14.net, or telephone Tony on (01594) 808600.
